HKU Doming Lam Composition Prize 2026-27

Applications are open for the third edition of the HKU Doming Lam Composition Prize, an annual contest aimed at recognising the university's budding compositional talents.

In addition to a cash prize, 2026 Prize Laureate(s) will have the opportunity to compose a new work for string quartet under the supervision of the Department's composition faculty members. The new work(s) will be featured at the Department's annual Performance Showcase concert at Loke Yew Hall in April 2027.

The visiting ensemble of the third edition of the Prize is the Cong Quartet.

Professor Stacy HUANG was the only academic to speak at The Economist's annual "Technology for Change Asia" summit (11-12 March, 2026), where she shared insights on AI and the creative economy (more details in the Arts Faculty feature). In February, she delivered a keynote at a satellite event for ISMIR 2026 (Abu Dhabi), the premier and largest research venue for scholars and industry practitioners in the field of Music Information Retrieval (MIR).

The Asian premiere of The Longest Days and the Shortest Days, a tech-cantata staged by Professor Giorgio BIANCOROSSO, opens on March 4 at the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Angus LEE (assistant lecturer) delivered the Hong Kong première of Pierre Boulez's Sonatine (1946–49) with pianist Linda Yim as part of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble's New Horizons Recitals series.

10 November 2025

Professor Daniel CHUA’s monograph, Music & Joy: Lessons on the Good Life is a finalist in the American Academy of Religion award for “Religion and the Arts” (2025) and also received the Society for Music Theory Pedagogy and Public-Facing Scholarship Award (2025).

Music Scholarship Scheme 2026/27

JUPAS/Non-JUPAS/Mainland candidates who would like to be considered for admission under the Music Scholarship Scheme have to submit their application before May 29, 2026 (Hong Kong Time).

The online application requires you to submit a number of personal, academic and employment details, including an essay and a video. Please take this into consideration when planning your application and don’t wait till the last minute.

JUPAS candidates applying to the Music Scholarship Scheme must include Bachelor of Arts (JS6054) and / or Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Digital Technologies (JS6286) as one of their band A programme choices as of end of May 2026, after the deadline for updating programme choices before the release of HKDSE examination results.
