MUSI1018/2047/3019 Advanced music performance 1/2/3

These three courses are admitted by audition. Please
sign up for an audition time at the Music Office by 5:00pm 31 August 2011
at the latest. Details of the audition are:
Date: 2 September 2011
Time: 10:00am-5:00pm
Venue: G19, Hung Hing Ying Building
For the audition, please prepare five minutes of music consisting of two contrasting excerpts.
The results of the audition will be announced by email on 5 September
2011. If you are admitted to the course, you can enrol in MUSI1018/2047/3019
online within the add-drop period in September 2011.

MUSI1022/2066/3021 Performance study 1/2/3
(These courses are also offered to non-BA students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)
Students taking these courses have to enrol in two performance ensembles or workshops offered by the Music Department over two semesters. Your final grade in MUSI1022/2066/3021 will combine the result of each ensemble/workshop in which you enrol.
Note that you can only enrol online in MUSI1022/2066/3021 within the add-drop period in September 2011 AFTER your admission to the ensemble(s)/workshop(s) is confirmed.

Students intending to take MUSI1022/2066/3021 are required to complete a form and return it to the Music Office before 5:00pm 29 August 2011.

A. Ensembles and Auditions
Students who would like to be admitted to an ensemble must either attend an audition or seek the consent of the instructor concerned.
1. University Choir
To attend the audition, please sign up for a time slot at the Music Office by 12:00 noon 31 August 2011 at the latest. Details of the audition are:

Time: 4:00pm-6:00pm
Venue: MB123, Main Building
The results of the audition will be posted on the Department notice board the following day.
2. University Gamelan
Please attend the first meeting of the ensemble on 1 September 2011 and seek
the instructor’s consent to enrol in the ensemble. Second year students who
would like to enrol in University Gamelan must take MUSI2068. For further
enquires, please contact Dr. Deborah Waugh at debwaugh@hku.hk.
3. Percussion Ensemble
Please attend the first meeting of the ensemble on 1 September 2011 and seek
the instructor’s consent to enrol in the ensemble. For further enquires,

4. Union Philharmonic Orchestra
Please sign up for an audition time at the Music Office by 12:00 noon
13 August 2011 at the latest. Details of the audition are:
Date: 15 & 16 August 2011
Time: 9:00am-5:00pm
Venue: G19, Hung Hing Ying Building
In the audition, you will be asked to perform scales over three octaves, a sight-reading excerpt, and a three-minute excerpt of your own choice.
The results of the audition will be posted on the Department notice board
on 18 August 2011.
5. Historical Performance Practice/Early Music Ensemble
Please sign up for an audition time at the Music Office by 12:00 noon
31 August 2011 at the latest. Details of the audition are:
Date: 5 September 2011
Time: 10:00am-12:00noon
Venue: G19, Hung Hing Ying Building
Please prepare a five-minute excerpt from a Renaissance, Baroque, or early Classical work of your choice.
The results of the audition will be posted on the Department notice board
on 6 September 2011.
B. Workshops
Your admission to a particular workshop will be confirmed via email from the
Music Office by 7 September 2011 at the latest.
Each workshop comprises 20 sessions conducted over two semesters (10 sessions per semester).
Assessment will be based on a student’s progress throughout the year, as well as a practical examination held at the end of the second semester.
Students taking these workshops are required to pay a tuition fee. When your admission is confirmed, please obtain a bank pay-in slip from the Music Office for processing the payment. Once the workshops are launched, the tuition fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.
All workshops will be conducted in the form of a class of two to four students.
