MUSI1018/2047/3019 Advanced music performance 1/2/3

Prerequisite: admitted by audition.

MUSI1018 is for 1st year students, MUSI2047 for 2nd year students, MUSI3019 for 3rd year students. These courses are offered at the same time simultaneously.

• Please sign up for an audition on the form MUSI1018/2047/3019 Audition Schedule, available at the General Office of the Music Building, before 12:00 noon on 25 August 2009.

Date: 31 August 2009 (Monday)
Time: 10:00am-1:00pm
Venue: G19, Hung Hing Ying Building

The 10-minute audition comprises:

• Performance of two excerpts of works of your choice, each from a different style period.
  
• A short interview.
  
• Students should bring their own instruments other than piano, harpsichord, clavichord, chamber organ, which will be provided.
  
• The audition results will be posted on the Department's notice board at 5:00pm on Tuesday 1 September 2009.

MUSI1011/2032/3012 Orchestral Studies and Techniques 1/2/3

Prerequisite: admitted by audition.

Audition:
Date: 10-12 August 2009 (Monday-Wednesday)
Time: 2:00pm - 5:00pm
Venue: G19, Hung Hing Ying Building

• The 7-minute audition comprises:
  • Major scales , three octaves
  • 3-minute excerpt of a work of your choice
  • Sight-reading test
    
• Please contact Mr. Henry Li of the Union Philharmonic Orchestra, HKUSU on 9813 0510 to arrange an audition time.
• The audition results will be posted on the Department notice board at 3:00pm on 14 August 2009.

Enrolment: For credit-taking students, if approved to take the course, please enrol online during the course selection period or the add/drop period. Those who had already enrolled the course but failed to obtain approval, please drop the course accordingly.

For late enrollers: Extra audition sessions will be held for late enrollers upon request. Please check with Mr. Henry Li for details.

MUSI1017/2046/3018 Performance Workshop 1/2/3

Open to all students.

Prerequisite: No prerequisite. Musical background in NOT required.

MUSI1017 is for 1st-year students, MUSI2046 is for 2nd-year students, MUSI3018 is for 3rd-year students. These three courses are offered simultaneously. Students taking these courses may take one of the following workshops to earn credits:

• Dizi for beginners (sub class D)
• Intermediate Dizi (sub class D)
• Erhu for beginners (sub class E)
• Intermediate Erhu (sub class E)
• Guzheng for beginners (sub class G)
• Intermediate Guzheng (sub class G)
• Pipa for beginners (sub class A)
• Sheng for beginners (sub class H)
• Vocal Workshop * (sub class C)
• Western Percussion for beginners* (sub class B)
• Intermediate Western Percussion* (sub class B)
• Yangqin for beginners (sub class F)
• Choral Conducting for beginners* (sub class I)


• Students who intend to take one of the above workshops, please note the following steps:


1. Fill out an application form, available at the General Office of the Music Department, and return it to the General Office before 12:00 noon on 28 August 2009.


2. A list of students approved to take the workshops will be posted on the Department notice board by 10:00am on 1 September 2009. If you are approved to take the workshop, carry on with steps 3 and 4.


3. Enrol in MUSI1017/2046/3018 online.


4. Pay a tuition fee as specified on the application form and
   return the prepaid pay-in-slip to the General Office by 4 September 2009.


• Each workshop comprises 20 sessions conducted over two semesters (10 sessions per semester). Students who take these workshops will earn 3 credits at the end of the 2nd semester.
• Assessment will be based on each student’s progress throughout the year, and a practical examination.

Individual tutoring for non-beginners: All workshops, except those: marked with an *, will be conducted in the form of a class of 2-4 students. For students who (a) have previous experience with the instrument that they intend to learn, (b) prefer to have one-to-one instruction, and (c) are willing to pay a higher tuition fee, please contact Dr. Chan Hing-yan before 12:00 noon on 28 August 2009 for special arrangements.

Prerequisite: admitted by audition.

MUSI1016 is for 1st year students; MUSI2041 is for 2nd year students; MUSI3017 is for 3rd year students. These three courses are offered simultaneously.

Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Venue: MB123, Main Building

• Please attend the audition at the first meeting of the class on 1 September 2009 as specified above.
• The results of the audition will be posted on the Department notice board at 3:00pm on 8 September 2009.

Enrolment: Credit-taking students, if approved to take the course, please enrol online during the add/drop period. On the contrary, those who had already enrolled in the course online but failed to obtain approval, please drop the course accordingly.
