The theme of this conference is the multidimensional relationship between music and the body. The conference proposes to reckon the clashes between the various perspectives and approaches, and aims to attain a more holistic understanding of the relationship between music and the body by asking questions that cut across traditional disciplines. Invited speakers include Sander Gilman (Emory University/The University of Hong Kong), Eric Clarke (University of Oxford), Lawrence Zbikowski (University of Chicago), Martha Feldman (University of Chicago), Atau Tanaka (Goldsmiths, University of London), and Marina Gilman (Emory Voice Center).

Acousmatic Methodologies of the Ear

The goal of the symposium is to interrogate and reflect on various methodologies for investigating the means by which technology transforms members of societies into communities of listening in different locales. The symposium coincides with the residency of leading scholar on popular culture, Andrew F. Jones, who will be the Rayson Huang Fellow in the Department of Music from 21-26 March 2011. We welcome submissions in all fields dealing with recorded music, senses of hearing, and the acoustemologies of sound cultures.

Music and Transmission in East Asia

The symposium aims at locating the transmission of Chinese music within the larger framework of the global debate on identity formation, from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Invited speakers include Robert Bagley (Princeton University), Joseph Lam (University of Michigan), Alan Thrasher (University of British Columbia), and Richard Widdess (SOAS, University of London).

Island Cultures in Transition in the Asia-Pacific Region

A cross-disciplinary colloquium and performance event on regional cultures organized by The University of Hong Kong and Macquarie University with support from the Japan Foundation. Papers cover a range of regional cultural issues and are complemented by several concerts featuring performers from Australia, Bali, Hong Kong, Japan, and the UK.
