| As one of the
first native Chinese opera singers to achieve fame on the
world stage, Hao Jiang Tian’s (田浩江) journey from a teenage
factory worker in Beijing to celebrated operatic bass singer
at the Metropolitan Opera in New York is a riveting one.
Mr. Tian debuted at the Metropolitan Opera during the 1991/92
season. Since then he has earned recognition as one of the
most talented operatic bass singers with over 1300 performances
of 40 operatic roles worldwide. He has appeared at the Metropolitan
in 26 operas, including five new productions with stars such
as Pavarotti, Domingo, Te Kanawa, and Milnes. Mr. Tian has
performed in all the top opera theatres around the world
and has won acclaim for some of the greatest roles written
for bass.
This lecture recital is an autobiographical commentary on political, social, and musical changes that have shaped Tian’s life in China and America. It is a multimedia event that will involve film, live performance, lecture, and discussion.
